Tip of The Week: Automatically Retarget Your Shopify Abandoned Cart Customers

It’s November. *gasp*

That means you and just about everyone else are prepping for the upcoming holidays. It also means that we’re about to hit the busiest shopping season of the year.

Now, it’s nothing new to hear that the current cart abandonment rate sits at around 69% depending on who you get your stats from.

But with this time of the year being so important for eCommerce, we wanted the tip of the week to focus on helping Shopify-based stores be able to easily and automatically retarget customers who abandon their carts.

Lemme show you how it’s done.

How To Automate Your Abandoned Cart Funnel For Shopify

After that’s all said and done, you can start building your handy dandy — automation! (If you get this Blue Clues reference, I <3 you.)

This prebuilt automation is designed to show your customers up to 4 items they left in the cart with some copy content blocks you can customize to your liking.

Login to your account and go to AutomationsClick on New Automation on the top right side of the menu.

In the pop-up window, choose eCommerce and select the Recover Abandoned Carts for Shopify.

In that new dashboard window is your prebuilt automation that should look something like this.

To start, click on the Shopify Customer abandoned checkout trigger at the top. This will open up the settings for when this event is triggered.

These are the options you can choose from to calibrate this part of your automation:

  • Choose your shop (if you have more than one you manage)
  • Limit per subscriber
  • No limit
  • Do not trigger when already in automation
  • Once per day
  • Once only
  • Consider abandoned after…(choose how many hours to wait before sending the email)

After you’ve set that up, click on the first email that’s in the workflow. You can and should change the title and subject line of the email.

You can also add pre-header text to your email by toggling the option in the Optional Settings on the right.

Click Next when you’re done. In this next dashboard, you’ll see we’ve already put copy informing the customer that they forgot some things in their cart. (Feel free to change that up.)

To show the items that they’ve left in their cart, click the Content option in the top left menu, and go down to Integrations.

Choose the Shopify Abandoned Cart Integration.

Doing this will add a product name/price placeholder image, but don’t fret. The email will propagate and customize the items when it’s sent.

Now, simply click Save and continue on the top right side of the screen, and then choose Schedule in the following screen.

After that, you have an automation that is ready to be activated. If you want to, you can build more into this workflow by adding things like SMS messages, split conditions and more.

It all depends on your goals and what your data shows works for your audience.

And last, but definitely least, is to activate your new abandoned cart automation. You can do that by clicking the Activate button in the top right corner of your screen.

Your automation is now live!

So from here on out, if a logged user visits your site and abandons their cart, they will get these targeted cart reminders from you — all on autopilot.

That’s nice because you can simply set and forget this little money maker funnel to do most of the heavy lifting for you. However, we recommend taking the time to benchmark your results and then testing tweaks made to this automation funnel.

Doing that is a great way to find what works best for your audience and what brings in more revenue from this aspect of your marketing.
